Pottery is an ancient craft in Ethiopia but one that is yet to receive the benefit of modernization among local traditional potters. The cultural stigma attached to the profession leads to the social marginalization of potters, which has been the reality on the ground for a long time. This prevents the advancement of the craft and hinders full participation in the craft economy that is rapidly on the rise globally.
As a result of the stigma, or perhaps as a form of survival, traditional local potters solely exchange knowledge and receive skill transfer within families as an inheritance, further endangering the sustainability of the craft and cultural heritage.
The vision to establish a modern private ceramic arts studio was born out of our founder’s passion of uplifting communities. The glaring realization that space is needed to enable accessibility of pottery to a wider audience while also updating traditional techniques led to the founding of Kuri Clayworks. The studio symbolizes the natural desire to enhance economic and skill improvement of traditional potters as well as availing opportunity for young children to explore their creativity through pottery.
To establish and mainstream pottery focused creative entertainment and learning environment for young children, adults, hobbyist and artist alike.
To elevate the livelihood of women potters by creating a space that will be utilized to improve and learn new skills and introduce new technologies to revive and preserve the ancient craft of pottery.
